Our Department has a strongly international character, and our faculty and students are diverse in interests, origins, and intellectual orientations.
Our program is designed for students who seek the Ph.D. Although students entering without a Master’s degree earn an M.A. in History in the course of their study here, we do not admit full-time students who wish only to earn a Master’s degree. We attract students from all parts of the country and from many parts of the world.
Structure of the PhD Program. First-semester students all enroll in a methodologically oriented Proseminar, as well as seminars and graduate lecture courses. Adventurous breadth in art history is encouraged, and there is ample opportunity for coursework in related departments.

At the heart of the program is the two-year dissertation, an original scholarly work based on empirical research and analysis. Students spend the first year at Columbia University in the City of New York and the second year at the London School of Economics, and receive degrees from both institutions.

An undergraduate major in art history is not a requirement. It is also advised that students have prior knowledge of at least one foreign language at the time of application. Applicants to the PhD program are encouraged to contact faculty in their proposed field of study. A good time to do this is the fall semester.

Columbia University, Department of History (New York City, NY): Every student entering the Ph.D. program will receive a full fellowship (tuition, fees, and a stipend) upon admission. Students awarded such funding upon admission will receive five years of support (except for those entering with advanced standing, who will receive four years of support).
