The focus of Columbia’s graduate program in Psychology is on the training of Ph.D. students in research, teaching and scholarship in the areas of behavioral neuroscience, perception, cognition and social-personality psychology. This graduate program does not offer training in clinical psychology, school, counseling or industrial psychology.

The School of Professional Studies offers courses, certificates, graduate degrees, and special programs for a breadth of individuals seeking advanced skills and personal enrichment, from high school students to college undergraduates and from recent graduates to seasoned professionals.

All applicants are required to submit a completed application through our online Application Portal. While there is no separate deadline for international applicants, each degree program has its own application deadlines and requirements so review the information below carefully prior to applying.

Columbia offers a comprehensive array of academic programs. These include three undergraduate schools, thirteen graduate and professional schools, a world-renowned medical center, four affiliated colleges and seminaries, twenty-six libraries, and nearly two hundred research centers and institutes.

Recommendation e-mails are sent when an applicant submits their application. Applicants can continue to edit all parts of their application after submitting (with the only exception being changing programs), until a decision has been made on their application. Recommenders will receive an e-mail from Columbia FFSEAS with the subject line.

The SMS PhD program For the PhD program, we seek students with a demonstrated capacity to excel in the behavioral or social sciences or in history, a clear interest in training that will prepare them to advance knowledge in that discipline, and a commitment to applying those theoretical and methodological skills in a way that engages with critical questions about population health.
