Before signing on to become an online graduate student with Columbia, I checked nearly every online degree program in the country. In evaluating all of the schools for quality of education, variety of course offerings, quality of faculty, reputation of school, I can affirm that Columbia has one of the best programs in the country and by far the largest variety of course offerings!

The PhD is our primary doctoral program. The Doctor of Engineering Science variant of the doctorate has identical academic requirements to the PhD program, described here. The Doctor of Engineering degree is officially designated Eng.Sc.D., but in practice is typically referred to as DES.
However, students who enrolled for PhD without a prior masters degree may import at most four electives from a previous institution, since two electives offered by the Computer Science department, in addition to the four distribution courses, must be taken at Columbia to complete the MS (see MS Leading to PhD). Distribution courses must be taken at Columbia and cannot be imported.

The Ph.D. specialization in Data Science at Columbia University is an option within each participating department's Ph.D program at Columbia. The current participating departments are Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, and Statistics.
Recommendation e-mails are sent when an applicant submits their application. Applicants can continue to edit all parts of their application after submitting (with the only exception being changing programs), until a decision has been made on their application. Recommenders will receive an e-mail from Columbia FFSEAS with the subject line.
